HOW TO SING A SONG YOUR OWN WAY!

Many artists have jumpstarted their careers by singing a hit song from another artist. In order to really do the song justice, you have to make it better than the original version. That is not so easy to do! How to make a song your own and really make it pop?

You can start by choosing a song you love and know well. Now choose two of your favorite artists (Christina Aguilera and Ariana Grande). Let’s use Sam Smith’s song “I’m Not The Only One.” Sing through the song the way you think Christina Aguilera would sing it. Make sure you record each time you sing the song. Listen back and see what you think sounds good and keep it. Now, sing the song through again the way you think Ariana Grande would sing it and record it. Listen back and see what you like and dislike about that version. You can add runs, go up when the artist goes down with notes and vice versa.

If you are going to sing a previous hit song, work on making that song different (your own) by bring your own sound and style to the song. You need to personalize the song and making it your feelings, emotions and experience which will make it interesting to your audience. You also want to develop your own personal style. To do this you need to know your strengths and weaknesses. You need to know what kind of songs move you and brings out your best voice. Know yourself as an artist and what kind of music you like to sing or play. This will help you create your own style, image and sound.

After you done this process a few times. Record the song with all the added in runs, phrasing and inflections to create your own feel for the song. Don’t sing a song just like the artist. Make the song your own by singing it with your own personal style and sound. Listen to Koko Higa sing “I’m Not The Only One” singing the song in her own style and sound.
