HOW TO SING WITH A BRIGHT SOUND!
How do you get a brighter sound when you are singing? It has to do with the shape of your mouth, your lips to be exact. The shape of your lips can create a bright sound or a deeper, darker sound.
If you make a sound like “whoof,” your mouth is shaped like an “O” creating a deeper, darker shade of tone. But if you change your facial expression with an open mouth, big teeth smile as you lift the cheekbones and say “hey,” you will get a brighter vocal color.
My all-time favorite singer, Christina Aguilera, has a bright and warm sound. Check out her YouTube video “Christina Aguilera’s Best Live Vocals.” Watch her mouth as she sings and notice her wide open mouth, cheekbones lifted and she the tip of her tongue is right behind the back of her teeth. This gives her a beautiful open and bright sound in her vocals. She continues with some amazing runs keeping a relaxed tongue and the tip of the tongue is right behind the back of her teeth. It’s important to always maintain open throat throughout the song.
At 2:07 in the video, Christina changes the sound to a deeper fuller voice by retracting the back of the tongue. This does cause some tongue tension for a moment, but it is intentional. You never want to sing that way throughout a song.
Everyone has their own unique timbre or tone. So, brighten the vocal color of your voice and open your mouth like a big smile, open throat, and a neutral position for the tongue.
