CREATIVE EXERCISES WHEN SINGING OR PLAYING PIANO
It’s important to make your practice a fun time. Whether you are singing or playing piano, have fun with it. The creativity needs to flow! How do you do this? Well, there are a few different ways that I like to have fun when I’m practicing.
If you are singing a song with an artist, try to find harmonies to go along with the lead vocals. Sing two notes above or below the singer (a 3rd above or below). If you are singing the lead, try adding some runs or go down when the notes are going up and vice versa. There is no right and wrong, it’s about having fun and using your creative talent to think out of the box.
For a vocal challenge, listen to a new song, play the first verse and then mimic what you have heard. Do the same thing with the chorus. Now, try to find some harmonizing notes to sing in the chorus. To start you can sing whatever background vocals you hear. As you get better at it, make up some background vocals with a song that has none. These types of music games can be fun.
If you are playing piano, find some karaoke tracks for a song and see if you can find the chords and notes that are being playing. Another creative avenue is called “play along” where you randomly find some chords that sound good and hum a tune as you play them. This is a great way to get those creative juices flowing. Find three chords that sound good together when you play them consecutively and create your own song.
