CREATIVELY SHAPE YOUR VOWEL SOUNDS WHEN YOU SING!
As a singer, shaping your vowels the right way allows you to move from one syllable to the next with ease. The way you shape your vowel sounds will also help you to hit higher and lower notes. The technique is called diphthong.
A vowel sound may not be as clear cut as you think. For instance, the word night has one vowel, yet it can have two vowel sounds like n-ih-ee-t or day d-ayy-ee. It is a compound vowel character, also called a gliding vowel.
Pop singers love to use diphthong to create more individual singing styles. For example, certain artists are known for their strange pronunciation of words and how they stray from the normal pronunciation (like Sia in Chandelier). It’s also used in choirs and many other genres of singing.

- /aʊ/ as in “Town”
- /aɪ/ as in “Light”
- /eɪ/ as in “Play”
- /eə/ as in “Pair”
- /ɪə/ as in “Deer”
- /oʊ/ as in “Slow”
- /ɔɪ/ as in “Toy”
- /ʊə/ as in “Sure”
