WHAT ARE THE PATTERNS IN A SONG?
There are different types of patterns in a song. The song form is typically a pattern. There are also melodic patterns as a singer sings the song. The harmonic patterns, rhythmic patterns and alternative patterns, played by the piano and other instruments throughout the song.
There are some basic types of musical forms (song form), for instance verse-verse-chorus-verse (AABA) or verse-chorus-verse-chorus (ABAB). Some songs are written with a verse, bridge, chorus (ABC).
The melodic patterns are a repetitive pattern of notes being sung throughout the song. The hook or a motif would be considered a melodic pattern. The verses, bridge, pre-chorus, chorus are all melodic patterns in music.
A rhythmic pattern is the musical pattern in time. Rhythm can exist without a melody in a song, but a melody cannot exist without a rhythmic pattern. A good rhythmic pattern is an essential element in every song. Singers and pianists need a good rhythmic pattern when performing a song. You can mix together sounds from singers and instruments, but without a rhythmic backbone the song falls flat. A rhythmic musical instrument is used to provide a strong beat to a piece of music.
An alternative pattern in music is a regular rhythm with more complexity. The alternative pattern can alternate between the major and minor keys or alternating two different and independent rhythmic patterns.
Musical patterns exist in every song creating structural organization. I tell my voice and piano students to look for the patterns in a song. It helps when learning a song more quickly. It can also be a guide when writing your own songs.
