YOU NEED EXCELLENT TECHNIQUE

Technique is a skillful way of executing a song, whether it is singing or playing the piano. Technique deals with the concept of tone, musicality and expression in your performance.

Proper vocal technique allows singers to produce a warm, rich sound that is conducive to achieving a good vocal performance. Your posture, breathing, keeping an open throat, dropping your jaw, open your mouth (approx. 2 fingers from top teeth to bottom teeth) and shoulders back (don’t slouch. All of these things will produce consistently good vocal technique.

Breathing control is crucial, breath into your ribs and staying relaxed in a standing position. Inhaling too much air may cause pressure to build in your throat. On the other hand, too little air will weaken the voice. Your body naturally knows how to inhale enough air to get you through a sentence when you talk. It’s the same concept when you sing. Don’t worry about the inhale, it’s the exhale of airflow you need to master.

Piano technique is the ability to create the right sound at the right time with the piano. It is the ability to understand the music and your interaction with the piano. Proper piano technique is not just about pushing the right keys. Technique is about the way you sit, how you drop your fingers onto the piano (which affect the sound of the piano). Correct posture and sitting position will allow you to translate energy from your entire body to the fingertips.

For piano, there are lots of exercises books you can buy to strengthen your performance. Work on your scales, chords & inversions of the chords, arpeggios, and cadences to strengthen your technique.

JOKE FOR THE DAY:

Where did the music teacher leave her keys?

In the piano.
