MANIPULATING YOUR TONE WHEN YOU SING
The tone of your singing voice is referring to the quality of the sound. Your tone impacts every aspect of your singing. The specific qualities and colors (warm, dark, bright, harsh) of the sound differ from one singer to another.
Every singer has their own unique tone (or timbre), depending on the shape of your vocal tract and sinus. This is why siblings and family members blend well when they sing together. They all have similar physical structure and tone. You can manipulate your tone to change the sound somewhat with different techniques.
You will never completely change your tone, but you can manipulate the sound. First, using inflections and how you enunciate your words and vowel sounds. Another way to manipulate the sound is where you place the sound. For instance, in front of your lips, toward the sinus area, the roof of your mouth, or toward the back of your mouth.
Have you ever noticed how pianos sound differently, Steinway verses Baldwin; instruments sound different depending on type and brand. Every instrument has its own tone or sound. It is the way the instrument sounds. If you think about all the different types of guitars, pianos and other instruments, they all have their own unique sound. The tone of an instrument can be manipulated as well, with different pedals, electronic gadgets, tuning and technique.
