BEING CREATIVE WITH VOICE & PIANO
If you can find the feeling in a song, you can find your way. Be creative and find your own melody and create your own song. Whether it’s playing piano or singing, you can be creative. Do you hear a riff or a melody in your head? Stop and record it on a recorder before you lose the idea.
FREESYLING OR IMPROVISING
Freestyling or Improvising plays a big role in singing and writing a song. If you hear a melody in your head, sit down and play the notes on the piano. If you are a singer, sing what you hear out loud and record it. Maybe it was from a dream, capture the moment and record it.
CHORDS OR BEATS
Another way is by play a few chords. See what sounds good and create a chord progression. If you put a few bars together build from there. Once you’ve put a few chords together try and come up with a melody.
Lots of singers use beats, which you can find on youtube and other outlets on the internet. Find or create a beat that you connect with. As you listen to the beat create a melody. Maybe some word will pop into your head or a good hook. Always record everything. It’s much easier to erase, than to wish you had recorded that moment. Don’t lose the magic.
WRITING LYRICS
Writing the lyrics is an art form all to itself. You can craft them and be clever with great hooks like “Lean on Me” or “We Will Rock You” simple, clear and precise. These types of lyrics speak to everyone. For instance, Christina Aguilera’s song “You Lost Me,” the lyrics “we had magic and this is tragic, you couldn’t keep your hands to yourself” gives you a clear picture with very creative words. You want people to understand and get it. When people get it, it works. Keep a journal with all your lyrics ideas, hooks, and creative thoughts.
