HOW TO GET A CLEARER LESS NASAL SOUND
A nasal tone produces a sound that is thinner and less clear in tone. Some country and pop singers have a very nasal sounding voice. You can determine the big difference between a nasal voice and a non-nasal voice by plugging your nose while singing. Nasality is used in some genres of music. Brittney Spears has made a career with a nasal sounding tone.
Everyone has a slightly different quality to their voice. People that speak with a nasal voice can sound as though they’re speaking through a clogged-up nose. A deviated septum, allergies, hyponasality or a nasal obstruction can create that sound in a voice. A lazy soft palate can also cause a nasal sound
The “epiglottic funnel” is a funnel that is formed in the area above the vocal folds. If you make the epiglottic funnel smaller at the opening, by bringing the arytenoid cartilage closer to the epiglottis (the petiole) you can get rid of the nasal tone as well. But if there is something physically wrong, you will not eliminate the sound completely.
If you want to decrease or eliminate the nasal tone in your singing voice, keep an open throat. For a vocal exercise sing the word “mum” or “gug” up and down the scale and notice how the back of your throat opens because the soft palate stays up. A nasal tone is not bad. We each have a uniquely different sounding tone, no two voices are exactly
