FIRST STEP TO MASTER YOUR VOICE!
The first step to create a beautiful and professional sound is how you enunciate & pronounce your words. You can immediately make your voice sound better by enunciating your words the right way. A good singer should aim to achieve good enunciation, pronunciation and inflections to create a professional sound in the voice.
The right inflections (rise and fall of pitch), enunciation (how clearly & distinctly you sound out the words being sung) and pronunciation (which syllables are emphasized and how the letters in the words sound) affect the feeling of a song. If you are mumbling the words you are singing, you will not get your message across because no one will know what the song is about. A good singer will have clear enunciation and they will craft each syllable precisely as needed.
Pronunciation is related to how each syllable is emphasized and how the letters in each word are pronounced. Enunciation refers to how clarity and concisely the lyrics as sung, sounding out the entire word like “around” (putting the d on the end of the word). So, whether you call it diction, enunciation or pronunciation it’s all about the clarity of each word and the way each syllable is shaped when singing. This is how you master your own sound.
Rock and pop songs has a more relaxed and lacks the crispness of each syllable sung. Listen to Sia sing “Chandelier,” her enunciation and inflection of words are very distinct.
It’s very important to master your sound and a clear and masterful pronunciation and enunciation of the words being sung. Each word should be expressed exactly as the singer intends. Practicing your enunciation is an easy way to improve your singing voice, and easily convey your lyrical message! I have attached a video of Woody Chung singing “Cry Me A River.” Listen to how he’s carefully crafting each word being sung!
