TIPS TO HIT THOSE HIGH NOTES WITH POWER!

Every singer wants to increase their vocal range, and hit those high notes with power. No one is born with the ability to sing the highest notes perfectly, expanding your range takes time and practice.

There are two main muscle groups, the arytenoids and crico-thyroid muscles, that work with the vocal cords. Vocal cords are tiny little muscles that change in size and shape to create different sounds. The vocal cords get smaller and thinner when singing the high notes.

To sing high notes, learning how to relax your facial muscles. Try relaxing the face (lips, jaw and tongue), massage both sides of your cheek and jaw area. Do your vocal exercises and practice specific exercises daily to expand your range. Practice with songs that have challenging high notes.

A psychological trick for hitting the high notes is to “think the note down” which prevents the larynx from rising too much. When you approach a high note, think down, not up! It’s like a seesaw; when someone sits on one end, it goes down but your end goes up.  Likewise, give your high notes plenty of oomph “down” if you want them to pop up on the other end. You will feel resonance (vibration) in your head, but think down. If you push up to attempt to reach your higher notes, you can move your larynx out of place.

Singing in a mixed voice will produce a fuller sound. Mixed voice combines the beautiful highs of head voice with the deep and strong lows of chest voice. If you use a mixed voice hitting those high notes, you will produce a fuller version of the head voice. It is important to breathe from the diaphragm and use the diaphragm support to accomplish this sound. The power in your voice comes from the diaphragm, not your throat.

Lastly, a valuable technique for hitting the high notes is to use vowel modification. By using rounded, closed vowels helps transition from chest voice to head voice. Mariah Carey changes her vowel sounds to hit those amazing high notes! Hitting the high notes will without a doubt dazzle the audience and convert them into your fans during a singing performance.

JOKE FOR THE DAY:

Why did the opera singer bring a ladder to the concert?
