WHAT IS NEEDED FOR YOUR SINGING TO RESONATE EFFECTIVELY?

How to naturally amplify your voice from the recent blog (Monday 11/15 “How To Naturally Amplify Your Voice”) discussed the chambers in your body that resonate sound. They are acoustic resonators for your voice along with the larynx and pharynx. Vocal articulators are also used to manipulate the sound as you resonate. All the sounds we make when we sing are the results of muscles contracting, air passing through the vocal tract, and articulators producing the words we sing. We have a large and complex group of muscles that change the shape of our vocal tract. Any of the vocal organs above the larynx are used for the purpose of manipulating and generate vocal sound when we singing.

The vocal tract articulators are the tongue, soft palate, lips and teeth; the articulators modify or alter the sound of your voice. The oral cavity, which includes the lips, teeth, soft palate and tongue serve as articulators.  The oral cavity also acts as a resonator to amplify and intensifies your voice. The jaw could be considered an articulator as well, especially the lower jaw because we use it to manipulate the sound when we sing. Finally, the nasal cavity is used to influence vocal sound, but not in the same way. It’s amazing how complex our singing voice is and how many components are used to create a beautiful singing voice.
