A SECRET WAY TO SING WITH POWER!
We all know that the power for your voice comes from the diaphragm and breath support. But did you know that your vowel sounds and consonants play a very important role as well? Yes, they do! The vowel sounds start from the vibration of your vocal cords (folds) and the consonants are made by the exhaled air stream and they are formed by your mouth.
What does that mean? Well, consonants can push out too much air, which will cause tension in your muscles along the throat and mouth. This will cause your throat to try and close up. It can produce strain and pitch issues. Working with vowels sounds correctly will relax your throat and mouth. By doing this and keeping everything relaxed the acoustic chamber of your throat and mouth will increase the volume through resonance! Yes, give you a solid and stronger sound!
Here is a great exercise, sing a song through substituting the words for “ah.’ Just sing through the entire song using the vowel sound “ah” and see what it feels like! Sing very smoothly through the melody, note by note and you should feel an open throat. Now, singing through the song with the lyrics. When you are singing a word focus on the vowel sound and let the consonant be secondary. Listen to Audrey Diaz singing “I Want You Around” cover by Snoh Aalegra with a solid commanding sound with rounded vowel sounds.
