THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEAD VOICE & FALSETTO
When a singer is singing in their head voice it is described as vibration felt in the upper half of your face. It is the sound that you experience in your skull or your head when you are singing at a high voice level. If you try to make a siren sound like “WEE-oww” or Waaaaaahhhhhh”, you will feel the vibration in your head.
The definition of singing in falsetto is a method of singing (usually a male singer) higher than normal range, singing into the head register. But some would say that both sexes are physically capable of singing in falsetto. It can be a controversial issue among instructors.
When you sing in your lower (chest register) your vocal cords are thick creating a fuller, richer sound. As you sing higher the vocal cords get thinner and your voice will not be as full and rich in sound. If you use a mixed voice, combining the lower register with you head register you can create a full sound in the head voice. Christina Aguilera is a master at singing in a mixed voice with the higher notes and falsetto. If you want the head register to sound thinner, weaker, softer or breathy you are thinning the vocal cords and that is when you are singing falsetto. They both use a head tone and vibration is felt in the head, but falsetto is a thinner, lighter sound and the head voice (with a mixed voice) has a fuller and stronger sound.
Hum a note, and take the pitch up and down slowly. Close your eyes, while doing the exercise. Do you feel the vibration moving up and down? Try doing the same thing with a different vowel sounds, like “ee”, “oo”, or “ah”. What happens if you try to buzz like a bee while singing a note? For my students, the first two exercises on my Vocal CD (Bubble – Prrr and the “R” Roll) really help with this as well. Both exercises have you go through each register with a smooth transition and you can feel the vibration in each resonating chamber.
Listen to Audrey Diaz singing “If I Ain’t Got You,” she used a mixed voice for most the high notes but goes into falsetto as she hits the high note in the chorus “but I DON’T want nothin at all.” When she sings the note for “Don’t” she thins out the vocal cords to hit that note in a light, airy type of sound, that is falsetto.
