HOW TO OVERCOME STAGE FRIGHT!

Singing or playing piano for a large audience or a few people can be intimidating. Some of the world’s most famous performers have suffered from extreme performance anxiety or stage fright like Ozzy Osbourne, Brian Wilson, Cher and Harry Styles to name a few. Harry Styles had severe stage fright when performing with One Direction. During a concert in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was forced to leave the stage in the middle of a song because he got sick and threw up back stage. The rest of the band had to finish the song without him. But that didn’t stop him, he kept going and didn’t quit. He went on to a successful solo career in 2016, writing his own songs with many hits! He never quit, he just kept going! Stage fright is not considered a full-blown phobia, but there is an extreme fear of this type called glossophobia.

However, to overcome stage fright takes time and continuous performing in front of an audience. The more you do it, the less intimidating it becomes and the more your confidence will grow. Here are some tips to help you along the way. Make sure you always warm up; proper posture makes you feel confident and daily practice helps perfect your vocals. Also, try singing in front of your family or friends, have a karaoke night. Choose the right songs for you and record yourself, listen back objectively (as if you were listening to someone else), this allows you to hear your current strengths issues and work on them. Stop thinking negative thoughts about what might go wrong. Instead, think about positive thoughts and reassuring yourself that you are going to do a great job. Refuse to dwell on thoughts that create self-doubt and low confidence.

Practice ways to calm yourself and relax your mind and body, such as deep breathes, relaxation stretching, yoga, and meditation. If you are not sure how you come across when you sing or play piano, then this is something to work on with your vocal coach or piano teacher. You can also practice in front of the mirror or with family and friends! Keep your shoulders down, relax your jaw and breathe! The more you sing or play piano in front of other people or on stage, the less anxiety or stage fright you will each time, look at Harry Styles!
