HOW TO BELT OUT THE HIGH NOTES!
Belting out the high notes is essentially singing the high notes and producing a strong and powerful sound. We discussed falsetto in yesterday’s blog (10/27 Singing High Notes in Falsetto). Today is the opposite of falsetto; the sound is loud and commanding. There are three important components.
The first component is breath support. It is important to breathe from the diaphragm and use the diaphragm support to accomplish this sound. The power in your voice comes from the diaphragm, not your throat. If you belt improperly (without breath support from the diaphragm), you can damage your voice and throat. (Read the blog about “Breathing For Singers” 7/27)
The second component is placement of sound. Placing the sound (resonance) is focused forward and up into the palate behind your upper front teeth to your nose. When you focus on placing the sound in that area, you will fee the resonance in the sinus area (mask area). Resonance is the intensity and quality of sound you create from the reverberation of sound waves vibrating from the vocal cords. The sinus area is also called ‘singing in the mask’.
The third component is singing with a mixed voice. The mixed voice is using the middle voice, combining the head and chest voice (Read the blog from 10/26 about “Singing In A Mixed Voice”). If you ever feel any discomfort, please stop. The process of belting out those high notes takes time and practice to do this the right way.
Listen to Addison Witt belt out those high notes in “Dangerous Woman”.
JOKE FOR THE DAY:
What’s the difference between a guitar player and a certificate of deposit? The CD will eventually mature and make money.
