CREATING YOUR OWN UNIQUE STYLE

From a young age, singers will mimic or try to sing like some of their favorite artists. You can develop your own unique style by copying other artists. Any artist will tell you they got their own style by first copying their favorite stars.

Here’s what to do:

Create a list with 5 or 6 of your favorite singers; choose the ones you want to sound like. Make sure their voices resonant with you. Once you’ve built your list of amazing artists, it’s time to starts cultivating your own voice.

Start borrowing the unique qualities in each of their voices. Using this method, you will develop and find your own unique style. Experiment with the different voices and find out which voices you identify with the most. The long-term strategy of copy other artists is to find your own style. Don’t worry about genre; I personally like Christina Aguilera, Shania Twain, Cheryl Crow and Whitney Houston. Each of theses artists fall into a different genre but the unique qualities of their voices stand out.

Make sure you find a practice spot where no one can hear you. If you are practicing and you have to worry about someone listening to you; this will shift your attention from improving your sound to worry about if you sound good. It’s okay to make mistakes; you are going to do it wrong many times before you do it right. So find an isolated spot where you can practice without being heard.

JOKE FOR THE DAY:

What kind of a band doesn’t play music? A rubber band.
