THE HEARTBEAT OF A SONG

To sing or play piano like a pro you must understand tempo. The tempo of a piece of music is the pace or the speed (slow or fast) at which a song is played or sung. The tempo or tempi (plural form of tempo) can create a feeling of intensity or it can create a feeling of relaxation. The speed of music is measured in beats per minute or BPM (example 60 BPM is slow or 160 BPM is faster). A metronome is used to play at an accurate and consistent pace. You can find different sounding metronomes on Youtube. A metronome is a valuable tool when learning how to play piano. It helps you to play the BPM accurately and consistently throughout the song. If you are a singer accompanying yourself with a piano or guitar, a metronome will help you keep an accurate pace throughout the song!

Tempo is like a heartbeat, which beats at a steady rate of speed. The tempo is the pulse of the song; it is the underlying beat. In classical music, many pieces have sections that slow down or speed up to show expression; this is called rubato. Every song is played from very slow (Largo) to very fast (Presto) and everywhere in between. There are tempo markings slower like grave slow, solemn and prestissimo which is very, very fast. The tempo is written at the beginning of a song; this is called a tempo marking.

Here are the most common tempo markings:

Largo = very slow, which is 45-50 BPM

Adagio = slow, which is 55-65 BPM

Moderato = moderate, which is 86-97 BPM

Allegro = fast, which is 109-132 BPM

Presto = very fast, which is 168-200 BPM
