Six Steps To Become A Professional Singer

If you are serious about becoming a professional singer, you need to treat it as a business. Having your own business means you have a hustle mentality. Your success is in your hands, don’t expect to be “discovered,” have the mindset that you need to put your voice and your music into the listening ear of everyone! It’s up to you: it takes work and dedication!

The first thing you need to do is train your voice. Learning how to sing the correct way, from the beginning; this will save you a lot of time and expense. Invest in some voice lessons with a professional vocal coach to learn proper technique prevents creating bad vocal habits you will have to break later on. Do your research, educate yourself about voice, music, songwritng and practice every day. The more time and effort (daily) you put into it, the better you will be. Create your own unique vocal sound to make your voice stand out (See Blog 12/5/20 “Creating Your Own Unique Style of Singing”).

Secondly, start writing your own songs. Keep a daily journal of emotions and things that happened to you or around you. Find a title or a hook and start writing. Again, practice makes perfect (see blog 2/2/21 “Easy Way To Write a Song” and blog 1/8/21 “A Simple Way To Write A Melody”).

The third step, find a way to add instrumentals to your song. Learn how to play the piano or guitar to help with songwriting. If that is not an option, find beats on Youtube and be creative. If you know someone who is a producer get some help there or put together a band. You have lots of options for the creation of your music.

The forth step is recording your songs and your vocals. You need more than one song; you will need a catalog of songs that you’ve written. Co-writing with another artist can help the learning process and create new ideas. Make sure you copyright your songs once they are completed. Register your new songs online at the Copyright Office: (1) a completed application form; (2) a nonrefundable filing fee; and (3) the required “deposit copies” of your work.

The fifth step, once you recorded the songs and have the copyright completed, you will want to release singles or an entire album on Amazon, Itunes, Spotify or Soundcloud. Now for the hustle of self-promoting, it’s very important to promote the songs to build your fan base. Use social media, the press and blogs (1/28/21 “Let Social Media Launch Your Music Career”).

Lastly, play for the audience, whether it’s online performances or live shows (hopefully in the near future). When you have any type of performance sell your merchandise: cd’s, links to itunes and spotify, t-shirts, ball caps, ect. Another avenue is to promote your music for movies and tv shows. Getting a song into a movie or tv show can create enormous exposure (see blog 12/9/20 “Performing In Public”).
