CHOOSING THE RIGHT SONGS

When you sing a song or play a song on the piano, it’s important that you connect to the song. The singer or pianist will need to feel and emotionally connect to the song. Sometimes people (including children) attach to the melody or beat.  You should pick a song that had some personal meaning to you. When a song is personally meaningful, your desire to share the message will drive your performance. This will instantly improve your performance because you are connecting with it, enabling you to sing with emotion.

The melody or tune of the song can also drive deep emotion and connection to a song as well. If you can connect your feelings to the song, then you are more likely to perform at your best. Just singing or playing a song like a robot, unemotional, going through the technical aspects without emotion will not make much of an impact on your audience. Think about the song “We Will Rock You” as you are sitting in an auditorium before a basketball game. The beat is a driving force that brings out emotion immediately. It can be the lyrics or melody that impacts your feeling.

Choosing songs that you love will help you focus on the meaning of the song and the energy of the song rather than any nervousness you will feel. Lyrics are important, but do not neglect the other parts of the songs, like tempo, timing, composition notation, and technique.

It’s important pick the songs that have personal meaning to you and you enjoy singing or playing. So next time you sing or play a song on the piano, immerse yourself into the emotions of the song you are performing.
