WORKING THROUGH A PROBLEM SECTION OF A SONG

Every singer has experienced the one place in a song that is a struggle. You know that part is coming up and you dread it! There is always going to be a section in every song that needs work and preparation before singing or playing the song live. How do you work through a troubled area in a song.

The first thing you need to do is find out what the problem is. Is it range? Is it the phrasing? Is it the vowel sound that is giving you a problem or is it the words in that particular area of your range?

If it is range and the notes are too high or too low. The only thing you can do is work to extend your range. Extending your range can be done through vocal exercises.  Using the bubble (lip trills) or the r roll (tongue trills) will help expand your range. If you have a performance in a few days your only other option is to take the high note lower or raise the lower note.

If there is a phrase or sentence in a song that is giving you a problem. Sing the phrase with just the vowel sounds in the word. For instance, “Ain’t no mountain high enough,” sing A – O – Ou – A – I – E – Ou. If you still have trouble, it a vowel shape issue. If you slightly modify the sound, for instance and “A” sound to more of an “O” sound. Or the shape of the mouth from a smile shape to an “O” as if you were singing “O” will help. Keep working on it until you are able transition smoothly through the phrase with the vowel sounds.

Another way to approach a problem area is to bubble through the problem area. Notice how you can freely move up and down with no restrictions. As soon as you add words, it can be quite different. Focus on what it feels like when you bubble through the troubled area. Now, take that same feeling into your singing.

When playing an instrument like the piano, just play through the area slowly over and over. Focus and practice the difficult section until you are able to play through smoothly. Now play through the entire song.
